About this Tool

Determine how easy your text is to read. Optimize your content for your target audience using industry-standard formulas.

Understanding Readability Scores

Readability formulas measure the complexity of your text based on factors like word length and sentence structure. Here's what the scores mean:

Flesch Reading Ease

Scores range from 0 to 100. Higher scores indicate easier reading.

  • 90-100: Very Easy (5th grade)
  • 60-70: Standard (8th-9th grade)
  • 0-30: Very Difficult (College graduate)

Flesch-Kincaid Grade Level

Estimates the U.S. school grade level required to understand the text. For example, a score of 8 means an 8th grader can understand it. Aim for 7-9 for general web content.

Gunning Fog Index

Estimates the years of formal education needed to understand the text on the first reading. A score of 12 requires the reading level of a U.S. high school senior.

Tips for Better Readability

  • Shorten Sentences: Break long, complex sentences into shorter ones.
  • Use Simple Words: Replace complex words (3+ syllables) with simpler alternatives where possible.
  • Active Voice: Write in the active voice to make sentences clearer and more direct.
